The City of West Hollywood joined a growing coterie of cities banning retailers’ giving away plastic carrying bags this week by unanimously voting to direct staff to draw up such a ban that also includes a ten cent surcharge for paper sacks.
Los Angeles city council member Paul Koretz (also former-WeHo council member and -WeHo state assembly member) took a step further when he introduced a motion the same day that bans paper sacks in the Creative City’s neighboring megalopolis.
Modeled on the County’s law that bans plastic bags in the unincorporated areas it governs, the both laws seek to limit litter and encourage the use of reusable shopping bags.
The city has long sought to sack the use of plastic sacks, beginning in 2008, but the effort floundered on the shoals of stiff industry and commercial opposition.
