After what we thought was an international pop star confirming what many already knew, Ricky Martin has released a statement saying he is not, in fact, gay. And nor did he ever come out.
“While I am very supportive of the homosexual community, and truly appreciate the outpouring of support from fans all over the world, I am not a homosexual myself,” reads the brief statement in part, which was also sent to Queerty in Spanish. It adds: “I cannot comment further while there is a police investigation taking place, but I did not authorize any statement to be released on my website on my behalf. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused my fans. Amo a todos ustedes.”
Um, ok. Then how to explain his tweet that came out a day after the original web posting? The one that read “Whats going on gang?I’m doing great!Stronger than ever!I’m here relaxing @ home enjoying ur messages!I feel the love!Thanx for all!peace”? Still unclear, though it suggests his online accounts have been hacked, or the people he has managing them allowed them to become compromised in some elaborate prank.
Also unanswered: The rumors that the man he’s been seen with is his boyfriend.
Naturally, for every straight girl who, 48 hours ago, didn’t want to believe Ricky is gay, there will an outpouring of gay men who don’t want to believe he is straight.
UPDATE: We’re being told Ricky’s attorney will be having a press conference later in the day Thursday to address what happened.
